UPDATED Aug. 15: The Arlington Public Schools (APS) invited all potential employees to an on-the-spot hiring fair held Wednesday, Aug. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Arlington High School, 869 Mass. Ave. An online application was available on the APS website. One may see the dozens of opportunities listed here>>

Aug. 15 via email, Human Resources Director Rob Spiegel provided more information: "We currently have about 30 direct student-facing [teachers, long-term substitute teachers and paraprofessional] vacancies -- and that number is changing (and improving) every day. The challenging areas to hire continue to be special education and teaching assistants; this is the case for other districts as well. There are about another 30 positions vacant that are not directly student-facing (building substitutes, specialists, coaches)."

He said he he thinks it would be worthwhile for many people to attend the Wednesday, Aug. 16, hiring fair. "People in Arlington enjoy working with students and their colleagues. Our schedules are all weekday, daytime schedules. We offer benefits for most of the employees we hire, including health insurance, dental insurance and other insurances, [plus] sick- and personal-time off. Our benefit-eligible employees contribute to a pension system, either the Massachusetts Teachers Retirement System or the Town of Arlington Retirement system."

In a statement, the Arlington Public Schools report they "are committed to creating an inclusive and safe learning and working environment that reflects a diversity of perspectives, values and experiences. We welcome staff who are aware of the role that bias and prejudice play in society, are creative and willing to try new approaches, and are reflective about their daily practice. We are looking for candidates who welcome a challenge, are eager to collaborate and contribute to the success of students, are ready to engage in two-way partnership with families and who will contribute their diverse talents to the organization as a whole."
