Muse Stew: 4 performers

Muse Stew performed "Summer Breezes" from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 25, in the Arlington Center for the Arts' Shaira Ali Gallery on the third floor of the newly renovated community center at 20 Academy St.

Muse Stew persented compositions by Geri Allen, Alice Coltrane, Kenny Barron, Wayne Shorter, Edu Lobo and Joao Bosco. Two tunes, Allen’s “Unconditional Love” and Coltrane’s “Blue Nile,” are from New Standards, the recently published book of compositions by women edited by Terry Lynn Carrington.

Also performed were two tunes by Lobo, “Reza” and “Casa Forte,” and  “Incompatibilidade De Génios,” by Bosco.

Shorter’s composition “Speak No Evil,” Barron’s “Sunshowers” and “Spiral,” and “Estate” (Summer), an Italian song from 1960 by Bruno Martino (music) and Bruno Brighetti (lyrics), round out the program.

Muse Stew is a group led by Arlington resident Scott Samenfeld. Formed in 1990, the group has two CDs of original compositions – “Crossings” (1996) and “Live at the Zeitgeist Gallery” (2004).

The group members in addition to Samenfeld are Susanna Fiore (piano), Mark Mullins (trumpet) and Arlington resident Karen Gruber (congas and percussion).

Tickets are $10 at the door.
