'Nunsense' cast.

UPDATED May 16: Still going strong as one of the oldest community theaters in the country, Arlington Friends of the Drama, or AFD, is on track to conclude its 2022-2023 season on a fun and uplifting note by presenting the musical comedy "Nunsense."

With book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin, this play features a zany plot.

The Little Sisters of Hoboken have a big problem: After 52 of their members tragically succumbed to an accidental bout of food poisoning, burial plans were well under way.

But when Mother Mary Regina spends too much money on a new plasma TV, the sisters suddenly find that they don't have enough cash left for disposition of the last four decedents. (Thank Heavens for the deep freeze!) The solution? Put on a show, of course! But can they get the curtain up before the Board of Health closes in?

To celebrate the centennial season, AFD has been performing four shows, one from each quarter century of its history. "Nunsense" was last produced during AFD's 75th-anniversary year and played to sold-out crowds.

Masks are still required to be worn by all theatre-goers. Covid-19 safety measure are as follows: AFD carefully monitors CDC and local guidelines for Covid-19, and the nonprofit's leaders continue to update procedures and protocols.

This time around, the cast features Kathleen Wackowski as Mother Superior Mary Regina, Melissa Bornmann as mistress of novices Sister Mary Hubert, Rositsa Mihaleva as the ballet-loving Sister Mary Leo, Janet Pholi as the befuddled Sister Mary Amnesia and Susan Austin as the street-wise Sister Robert Anne.

Although the humor is sometimes irreverent, the tunes are catchy, and modern audiences still love this show, an AFD news release said.

"The five actresses involved in this latest production by AFD are exceptional in their individual performances and support each other admirably in the larger ensemble numbers...'NUNSENSE' is musical that still brings the funny and sweetness and certainly makes for a fun night out."
