Arlington police officer Mike Hogan and his K-9 partner, Eiko, were recently recognized at a Boston Red Sox game, Chief Julie Flaherty reported. Hogan and Eiko attended the Aug. 9 game at Fenway Park, where Eiko was honored as Service Dog of the Game, a summer series in which a service dog is recognized at home plate before every Tuesday evening home game.

The  invitation came about after the department posted a short video of Eiko jumping off a dock and into the water during a heat wave earlier this month.

At the game, Hogan and Eiko were brought out onto the field to be recognized for their service to the Arlington community.

"I'd like to thank the Red Sox for inviting us to the game, and I appreciate them for recognizing K-9 Eiko and the work he and police K-9s across the state do in their communities," Hogan said in a recent APD news release.

Eiko, a 7-year-old German Shepherd, is a dual-purpose police K-9 certified in both patrol and narcotics through the Boston Police K-9 Academy. Eiko, with the APD since 2017, has assisted in numerous apprehensions and searches, and he is a staple at community events and demonstrations.

Hogan has been a K-9 handler since 2006 and has been known as a dedicated member of the APD for the past 21 years, Flaherty said in the release. Hogan worked with other law-enforcement partners alongside the Boston Red Sox during the team's World Series win in 2013.

"Our K-9 unit has always been an important part of our department, and aside from the work they do alongside our officers, our K-9s have also formed lasting positive relationships with residents through school visits and community events," the chief said. "Officer Hogan and Eiko are a great team, and I am pleased to see them recognized as part of the Red Sox's Service Dog series."
