YourArlington, a hyperlocal nonprofit digital-only news site covering Arlington, Mass., has a part-time opening for an assistant to the editor. We seek someone who is skilled with content-management systems or able to learn quickly and has prior experience in mainstream-news journalism.
The primary responsibility is being able to rewrite/edit emailed messages and news releases and post them, with headlines and photographs/captions, where appropriate. This includes cropping and resizing photos.
This job is approximately 80 percent editing -- including creating headlines and cutlines, and handling photos -- and about 20 percent reporting/writing, subject to the needs of the organization. We seek someone with experience and/or education in mainstream hard-news reporting on any beat, and preferably someone who knows Associated Press style.
The ideal candidate is someone who lives in or near Arlington, Mass., a culturally vibrant, historically significant town of 46,000 less than 10 miles from Boston that is easily accessible via public transportation.
Applicants whose primary background is in academia and/or marketing are discouraged. Those with digital and/or newspaper experience are desired.
The site uses Joomla!, and we need someone who knows that platform or is technically inclined and could learn the basics of the system easily. We also seek:
- Good overall literacy;
- Knowledge of the role that responsible news media play in a democracy;
- Sharp news judgment;
- Familiarity with Arlington, Mass., or similar local communities;
- Occasional reports about local events, especially afternoon or evening governmental meetings, online and/or in person; and
- Someone with reliable transportation and the ability to work without a physical office.
Beginning compensation rate is anticipated at from $20 to $25 per hour, depending on experience, for no more than 20 hours per week on average.
As is true for everyone who works for YA, a small-but-growing nonprofit, this is an independent-contractor position, with no health insurance or other benefits provided.
