Abbott's Frozen Custard has been open in Broadway Plaza since April, but on July 12 it held a grand opening with state and local officials.

The New York-based chain of shops celebrated with Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Mike Kennealy, owner Jason Denoncourt and Town Manager Adam Chapdelaine. Free frozen custard was served.

Denoncourt told YourArlington that last year, Abbott’s Lexington on Patriots Day and it was expanding to Arlington, as it opened in April.

It occupies the space vacant since Artful Heart left for Medford Street in June 2016.

The location would be about a half block from Abilyn's Frozen Bakery, at 451 Mass. Ave.

Abbott's Arlington is the chain's fourth location in the Boston area; Abbott's also has shops in Brighton, Needham and Lexington.

Abbott's opened its first shop in Rochester, N.Y., in 1926, 24 years after founder Arthur Abbott started selling frozen custard at carnivals along the East Coast. It now has 40 locations spanning Massachusetts to Florida.
