UPDATED, Sept. 22: The League of Women Voters of Arlington and the Election Modernization Committee presented the public forum on reprecincting Wednesday, Sept. 22.

The Zoom meeting began at 7 p.m., with two explanatory videos, which you can watch in advance. The live meeting begins at 7:30 for questions and answers, followed by facilitated small breakout discussions. All Arlington residents are encouraged to attend.

LWVA, with an appointed member of the Election Modernization Committee, is working on public outreach for the redistricting plans and process.

How many precincts will Arlington have? What will the decision be based upon? How will new precinct lines be drawn? This forum will be of special interest to Town Meeting members as the decision made next month will affect whether some or all members be up for election next spring. Please come learn more and give your input.

Every 10 years, all communities in the Commonwealth are required to review population numbers from the federal census and submit a new precinct map for approval by the state. The Select Board begins by reviewing a draft of new boundary lines created by the secretary of state and then proposes adjustments, if necessary.

The Select Board votes to approve the final map and precinct descriptions and submits the final map by Oct. 30. The draft maps prepared by the state require local input as the state’s mapping algorithm focuses only on population numbers, and does not account for neighborhood makeup.
