UPDATED Feb. 16: The Select Board plans to conduct the final interviews for Arlington’s next town manager in a public forum at a date to be determined. The number of finalists has not yet been announced.

“We did our first round of interviews last week, which went very well, and will do the second round tomorrow,” said board Chair Len Diggins at the board's Feb. 6 meeting.

In another personnel action at the meeting, Ashley Maher, the de facto Select Board administrator for the past several years, was officially and unanimously named to the position. Among many responsibilities, the administrator prepares the annual Town Meeting warrant, agendas and information packets for the Select Board, coordinates public hearings and licensing procedures and supervises the Select Board’s Office. Maher began her role on Feb. 13.

Board member Diane Mahon on Feb. 6 thanked Maher for filling in these past few years. “It’s been seamless. Marie Krepelka had nothing but glowing kudos for Ashley.” The previous administrator, Krepelka had held the position for 23 years and was Arlington’s unofficial "mayor" until her death in October.

Diggins said he was impressed with Maher’s answers during the interview process. “Marie really valued and respected Ashley,” he said.

“It’s an excellent, easy choice,” said board member John Hurd. “It’s been a heavy burden to bear these past few years, and it’s in good hands.”

Board member Steve DeCourcey also congratulated Maher, saying, “We’ve been understaffed in the board office, and you’ve really stepped up. We appreciate that and everything you’ve done these past few years.”

Board member Eric Helmuth expressed his appreciation for Maher’s dedication. “You’ve demonstrated the kind of high-quality commitment and responsiveness to public service. I look forward to many more years of that.”

Maher comments

In a Feb. 16 town news release, Maher said: “I am excited to expand my responsibilities within the Select Board office and working alongside such a great staff. I look forward to the opportunity to streamline existing processes and to improve customer service for both the board and the public.”

A lifelong resident, Maher has worked in the office of the Select Board since 2016. First as principal clerk, preparing Select Board proclamations and organizing agenda materials for the Select Board meetings.

She was promoted to administrative assistant in 2018 and again in 2021 to become office manager, where she most recently supervised office staff, processed liquor licenses and managed the operating budget. Before her roles in the office of the Select Board, she worked as a zoning clerk in the Inspectional Services Department starting in 2013.
