UPDATED, June 7: The eighth annual Arlington Soapbox Derby drew racers from town as well as eastern Massachusetts on Saturday, June 4, and winners in each of the three divisions will compete in the world championships in Akron, Ohio, next month.

The Arlington competition on Eastern Avenue next to Robbins Farm Park has produced three world champs in the past two years. Participants in this year’s race included the Peterson family, a third-generation racing family. Jack Peterson raced in the 1950s, and now grandchildren Haliegh and Taylor participate in the sport.

Racers build and decorate their cars by themselves with help from parents or guardians. The cars are finely tuned and powered only by gravity. The Arlington derby is open to all girls and boys from ages 7 to 20.
