Arlingtonians are invited to enjoy art-related festivities in and around the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum today, as part of Town Day.
The museum is at One Whittemore Park, 611 Mass. Ave., in Arlington Center at Pleasant St. (Route 60), Mystic Street (Route 3) and Mass. Ave. (Route 2A). Free parking will be available in the municipal lot behind the building.
From 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., visitors may mingle with artists, shop for handmade items, witness the unveiling of a restored painting by the master himself, enjoy a family art hunt, tour the museum and potentially win a basket of art-themed items.
Art on the Green, basket raffle
In what organizers are calling “Art on the Green,” meaning the lawn in front of the museum, some 20 local artists plan to offer a wide variety of handmade items.
These are expected to include paintings, prints, collages, textiles, photographs, fabric art, pottery, cards and other paper crafts, stained glass, jewelry, soaps and candles, local-interest books and more.
As well, any given attendee might potentially become the winner of a raffle basket full of artsy items. Tickets for each of the two raffle baskets – one geared for children, the other for adults – cost $2 each; $5 covers three tickets. The winner is expected to be announced by 4:30 p.m.
Painting unveiling
At noon, museum officials plan to unveil a newly restored Cyrus Dallin painting inside the museum. “Bird Bath – Autumn” is one of a series of four garden landscapes at Dallin’s own Arlington home, 69 Oakland Ave, where he lived from 1900 to 1944.
The painting restoration was made possible by a grant from the Arlington Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
Free museum admission
The Cyrus Dallin Art Museum, located in the Jefferson Cutter House, documents the life of famed artist Cyrus Dallin. Admission will be free. Visitors can view Dallin’s nearly 100 works of art, including approximately 50 sculptures, 10 paintings, and several coins and medals. One may also take a guided tour with a knowledgeable museum docent. No donations will be solicited that day, according to museumn officials.
The museum’s mission is to promote new insights into shared history by exploring the life, work and values of this celebrated sculptor, painter, educator and Indigenous rights advocate.
